32nd Annual Student Art Show


Call for Entries

It’s time to gather your students’ artwork to be represented in the
Santa Maria Arts Council’s 32
nd Annual Student Art Show.
This is a great opportunity to recognize the creative talents of your students and
help keep the visual arts programs alive in our schools.


Criteria: Eligible artwork is ORIGINAL 2 dimensional work, mounted or matted, with finished outside dimensions no larger than 16" x 20". Use only materials that are thin and can be stapled or tacked to display area. No glass or framed pieces.

3 dimensional work must be free standing or have hanger attached to back
for additional support purposes
. Size not to exceed 12" wide by 18" high.



Artwork Submission Information
15 pieces from each teacher in each grade (7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12)
1 entry per student

Due to limited space, we are unable to accept more pieces than listed above. If more pieces are submitted, the Santa Maria Arts Council reserves the right to choose pieces to be displayed. Tape or staple labels provided to the lower right hand corner or works on paper. Secure label to 3-D projects with tape.

Student Show Timeline

Thursday, March 1 & Friday, March 2 Deliver Artwork to the Santa Maria Public Library, Shepard Hall, 3-6pm

Thursday, March 8 Student Art Show Opens to the public.

Wednesday, March 28 Awards Ceremony - 5:30 - 7:00 pm

Thursday, March 29 Show Closed - Teachers pick up artwork 3-6pm

Friday, March 30 Teachers pick up artwork 3-6pm

Categories:

Drawing: Includes pencil, markers, charcoal, pen or brush and ink, scratchboard, and other line compositions.

Painting: Poster paints, watercolors, oils and acrylic paints.

Design: 2 Dimensional works including collage, printmaking, decorative and patterned works. Maximum size is 16" x 20", including mat.

3-D Work: Ceramics, sculpture, constructions, papier-mache, wood, etc. Size not to exceed 12" wide by 18" high (will be displayed in glass case.)

Photography: Grades 9 - 12 only.
Traditional black and white prints.
Digitally altered images either black & white, or color.
All digital work must be labeled as such.

Judging: Judging will be done by local professional artists and/or teachers who will be using the following criteria:
1. Originality and creativity in the choice and handling of subject.
2. Exciting and original use of medium to create an effective visual impact.
3. Personal expression - the student’s unique vision is evident.

Prizes: 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place in each grade level will receive ribbons and cash prizes. Honorable mentions will receive a ribbon. Best of Show will receive a rosette ribbon and a cash prize. All students will receive a certificate of participation. Prizes awarded on Wednesday, March 28, 5:30 - 7 p.m.

Exhibit: March 8 - March 28, 2012:
Please note that the Shepard Hall serves as a community meeting space for local organizations and may not be available at all times to the general public.

Hours are: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday 12 - 8 p.m.
Thursday, Friday, Saturday 10 - 6 p.m.
Closed Sundays. Closed Friday, March 16, 2012.
All artwork submitted shall remain in Shepard Hall for the entire duration of the show (March 8 - March 28). No artwork will be returned until March 29, and students will not be allowed to remove pieces for another show. Please do not submit artwork if it cannot remain for the entire show.

Liability: Please note: The Santa Maria Public Library and Shepard Hall are public places with minimal security. The Santa Maria Arts Council, the Santa Maria Public Library, and their employees or volunteers are not responsible for lost or damaged artwork. Please do not submit valuable or easily damaged pieces.
